Meditation does not work.
‘Meditation’ refers usually to an Indian (Hindu) or European (Buddhist) derived set of practices aimed at changing the self for supernatural purposes–purposes that one would not consider acheivable, such as;
levitating
becoming completely free of all stress regardless of prior experiences, poverty, or environment
visiting supernatural beings
becoming immortal
etc.
Particular types of personalities are interested in meditation, in terms of the most common psychological personality measures (The Big Five), the tend to be:
N- emotionally stable
E- introverted
O+ open-minded
A+ caring
C- disorganised
However, most people who keep a regular meditation practice or become part of a religious group quit after a 2 year period, those that continue on have this personality;
N- emotionally stable
E introverted/extroverted
O+ open-minded
A+ caring
C+ organised
Studies done where participants were RANDOMLY SELECTED from the public to medititate in silence (no religious or spiritual doctrine), their personality changed in this general direction;
N+ emotionally destabilised
E- introverted
O+ open-minded
A+ caring
C- disorganised
Many of those who were close-minded, emotionally stable and organised became more disorganised, open-minded and emotionall destabilised. However, they also became more introverted and caring.
Generally people quit meditation because it results in chronic negative mood states, mental disorganisation, and lack of desire to acheive (autonomy).
Meditation had become prominent in neo-european colonial states because:
1. Income inequality has risen faster for any nation in recorded history in australia, followed by USA, NZ, Canada and UK, giving rise in an increase in mental illness rates.
2. As the fabric of neo-colonial european societies break down, both oriental people and their religion are gradually moving into these societies to naturally take advantage of their weaknesses.
Any study which uses randomised controls, and those which study people already ‘meditative’ (despite never meditating) indicate that all people that enjoy meditation in the long-term were already born meditative. There is no point meditating if you are 95% of the rest of the population, the 5% will simply make money and fun out of you (hence child abuse and anonymity is the hallmark of all ‘meditation organisations’).
