Maybe lie down and meditate, rather than sitting.
Sit comfortably.
Obviously, sitting cross-legged is not something that most westerners are used to, and this is a very common problem. Basically, it is a matter of familiarization, but of course some exercises can help a lot.
They are obviously difficult to describe here, but there are several stretching exercises that can make sitting easier quite effectively. You could consult a yoga teacher, or a center or group where meditation is practiced.
In general, if you are relatively new to meditation, it is also good to make your sessions not too long, otherwise your meditation may be merely about physical problems and dullness!
